Diana at 50

Diana at 50

After Diana’s death, nine years after the car crash in the Paris tunnel, I attended a ball at Althorp, her ancestral home in the English county of Northamptonshire. The party was hosted, improbably, by Mikhail Gorbachev (with Tatler magazine) to raise money for his late wife’s foundation. The crowd partying in the tent that night was Diana’s crowd—the London über-swirl of fashion and society and media. Had she been there, Diana would have lit up the gathering with her radiant blondeness. Sitting next to old Gorby, she would have caused his birthmark to flush deeper as she leaned in to hear him speak of his wife, Raisa, grasping his hand as she fixed her big blue eyes on him.
Diana would have been 50 this month. What would she have been like? Still great-looking: that’s a given. Her mother, Frances Shand Kydd, with her cornflower-blue eyes and striding sexuality, was a handsome woman to the very end. Fashionwise, Diana would have gone the J.Crew and Galliano route à la Michelle Obama, always knowing how to mix the casual with the glam. There is no doubt she would have kept her chin taut with strategic Botox shots and her bare arms buff from the gym. Remarriage? At least two, I suspect, on both sides of the Atlantic. Always so professional herself, she would have soon grown exasperated with Dodi Al-Fayed’s hopeless unreliability. After the breakup I see her moving to her favorite city, New York, spending a few cocooned years safely married to a super-rich hedge-fund guy who could provide her with what she called “all the toys”: the plane, the private island, the security detail. Gliding sleekly into her 40s, her romantic taste would have moved to men of power over boys of play. She’d have tired of the hedge-fund guy and drifted into undercover trysts with someone more exciting—a high-mindedly horny late-night talk-show host, or a globe-trotting French finance wizard destined for the Élysée Palace. I suspect she would have retained a weakness for men in uniform, and a yen for dashing Muslim men. (A two-year fling with a Pakistani general, rumored to have links to the ISI, would have been a particular headache to the Foreign Office and the State Department.) Davos and the Clinton Global Initiative would have become her new post-palace power circles. She would perhaps have caused a press sensation with an unplanned pledge from the CGI stage to raise $50 million to help educate women in South Sudan.
Back in Britain, to visit William and Harry, she would have enjoyed some elegant schadenfreude over the scandal at Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.—the one that revealed that for years the British tabloids had been hacking into the phones of celebrities and royals and publishing their illicit skimmings. She would have sued for sure, and collected record-breaking damages (donating to the children’s cancer ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children). Is it possible that even Squidgygate, the embarrassingly steamy phone call between Diana and her lover James Gilbey in December 1989, was really one of the earliest examples of press malfeasance? I never believed the bizarre explanation, investigated at length in my book, The Diana Chronicles, that a radio ham named Cyril Reenan had picked up this call and offered it to Murdoch’s tabloid The Sun. Was Reenan, who later spoke of “being set up by a sinister conspiracy” and died in 2004, really a cover for a nefarious phone hacker? If so, Diana’s obsession about eavesdroppers in the last days of her life—often mocked as paranoia—was simply the sound intuition of a careful student of the folkways of Fleet Street.

macho man savage heart

macho man savage heart

A medical examiner says something went wrong with professional wrestler "Macho Man" Randy Savage's heart before he crashed his car and declared the cause of death as heart disease.
The autopsy released Thursday reveals that 58-year-old Randy Poffo, known professionally as Randy Savage, had an enlarged heart with severe blocking of his coronary arteries. With only minor injuries from the crash, the Tampa Bay area medical examiner determined the cause of death to be heart disease.

Authorities say Savage was driving in Pinellas County May 20 when he lost consciousness and crashed into a tree. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Toxicology results showed small traces of alcohol and hydrocodone in Poffo's system, but officials say the amounts wouldn't have factored into the crash.

Strauss-Kahn free from house arrest; charges stand

Former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn walked out of court free without bail or home confinement after prosecutors said extensive background investigation of the hotel maid accusing him of sexual assault gave them pause.

Strauss-Kahn had been under pricey house arrest for weeks in a Manhattan loft on $6 million in cash bond. The charges, which include attempted rape, have not been reduced, but the move signals that prosecutors do not believe the accusations are as ironclad as they once seemed.

"There will be no rush to judgment,'' New York Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus said at the hearing. "The people will continue to investigate and re-examine the matter as appropriate.''

Under the release terms, Strauss-Kahn can come and go as he pleases in New York, however, he was not allowed to be in possession of his passport, according to NBC News. He would also have his $1 million bail and $5 million bond returned.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, left the courthouse smiling and holding hands with his wife, French journalist Anne Sinclair. He wore a dark gray suit, and she a white jacket.

"It is a great relief," said one of Strauss-Kahn's lawyers, William Taylor, adding "it is so important in this country that people, especially the media, refrain from judgment until the facts are all in."

Celebrating the Fourth of July

 Celebrating the Fourth of July

Americans are blessed as we approach the Fourth of July for many reasons. Only a small one is that our annual celebration of Independence Day occurs as part of an extended holiday weekend once again this year. With the Fourth of July falling on a Monday, many people will use the entire three day weekend not only to commemorate our nation's independence, but also to whoop it up at more than one party.
Here is a look at various events organized throughout Southwest Florida to celebrate Independence Day weekend.

Fort Myers Freedom Fest: Located in the historic river district in downtown Fort Myers, the Freedom Fest gets underway at 1:00pm on July 4, 2011. To start the show, there will be children's play areas and festive music from a dj. At 6:00pm popular local bands including "Deb and the Dynamics" and "Fakahatchee" entertain the crowd. The much anticipated fireworks show over the Caloosahatchee River begins at 9:30pm. The show is free but seats will be available in a preferred viewing area of the Harborside Events Center for $5. Additionally, wristbands will be sold for $10, which offer discounts on food and drink purchased at nearby restaurants and bars.

Miromar Outlets: The annual Independence Day celebration at Miromar Outlets in Estero will actually happen on July 2, 2011. At 6:30pm, crowds can gather at the large outlet mall to watch an exciting show on the lake near Germain Arena. The performance will be put on by the Southern Extreme Waterski Team. Many vendors and kids attractions will be available to keep the crowd buzzing until the fireworks over the lake begin after sunset.

Star Spangled Bonita: This annual free party at Riverside Park in Bonita Springs gets started at 6:00pm on July 4, 2011. There will be live music, waterslides, games, and plenty of children's amusements. Special activities for the whole family include a pie baking cook-off and several eating competitions, where contestants can wolf down countless hot dogs, ice cream, and even watermelon. In lieu of traditional fireworks, Star Spangled Bonita will culminate the celebration with a high powered laser light show after dark.

4th Fest 2011: With so much excitement, two days are needed to celebrate Independence Day weekend properly in Punta Gorda. Held at Laishley Park on the Peace River, the 4th Fest takes place between 10:00am -- 10:00pm on both July 3 and July 4. Organizers are promising "water mania," as the event will feature a dozen waterslides, for which both individual tickets and all-day wristbands are available. Other highlights include a battle of the bands, a Paul Bunyun lumberjack show as seen on ESPN, bounce houses, numerous vendors, food, and beer sales on site. Fireworks begin at 9:00pm. Entry fee is $3 for adults and free to children twelve and under.

Red, White and Boom: This annual free celebration in Cape Coral attracted over 20,000 visitors in 2010. This year's show will be held on July 4 between 4:00pm and 10:00pm on Cape Coral Parkway at the foot of the bridge. The celebration will feature a Family Fun Zone, loaded with activities for children, as well as over 100 vendors offering food, drinks, and souvenirs. The inaugural running of the Freedom 5k over the bridge begins at 6:30pm. Radio station "Cat Country" welcomes country music star, and former Trick Pony singer, Heidi Newfield, who will perform at 8:00pm. On a more serious note, Red, White and Boom will pay tribute to the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Finally, the night concludes with a gigantic fireworks show over the Caloosahatchee River after dark.

One very common day trading online mistake to make is being afraid to actually trade. Therefore, day traders often start out with very little money. However, day traders need enough capital to have the chance to make some money and lose some money. Losing is a valuable lesson in day trading; just make sure you learn your lesson from every loss that you make. No having enough funds in your day trading account will rob you of valuable learning experiences.

Day Trading Online Mistake #2: Picking Up Trading Along The Way
If you think you can pick up day trading as you start day trading online, you will most probably lose all your money. It is not that easy and it usually sends day traders into a downward spiral. The loss of money will make one an emotional day trader and that will make a day trader lose even more money. Before a day trader enters a day trading arena, they ought to be fully prepared to handle the markets. Do you homework, know the risks and how to handle the markets and come out on top of the trading markets.

Day Trading Online Mistake #3: Trading is like Collecting Stamps
Day trading online cannot be just a hobby. Day trading online is serious business. It requires the same amount of effort that one puts in a small company or a business. It requires a day trading plan, research, goals and returns.

Day Trading Online Mistake #4: Overconfidence
Just because a day trader made money on one trade or a few of them does not make them an expert. The day trading markets are cruel and wild. Day traders have to be on your toes. The second that a day trader thinks that they have the markets all figured out, is the second that day traders are playing a losing battle. The best thing to do is to have confidence that you are trading the right market and the right indicators for your personality.

Why do traders insist on trading without a day trading plan? The same way that a business should not operate without a plan, a battle should not be fought without a battle plan, day trading should not be attempted without a proper day trading plan.

Great Lakes Beaches

Great Lakes Beaches
1. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Lake Michigan, Michigan. This area has some of the most spectacular coastal dunes in the world. “I especially liked trekking up the huge dune on the north end of this expansive park,” Leatherman said. A variety of beaches here offer fine to grainy sand and clean, clear water. Children often play and look for Petoskey stones in the small, shallow creeks, where the water is warmer than the lake. Nearby Traverse City has many attractions, including wineries and breweries.

Presque Isle State Park, Lake Erie, Pennsylvania. This 7-mile-long sand spit is host to a range of water-based activities, including 11 popular swimming areas and unique, uncrowded ecological areas. The 3,200-acre peninsula offers many recreational activities, including swimming, boating, bird watching, fishing, hiking, bicycling and in-line skating. While you’re in the area, take a two-hour drive up the coast and visit Niagara Falls.
Sand Point Beach, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Lake Superior, Michigan.
This small beach is protected from waves by offshore islands and the water is shallow. “These factors make the water warm enough to go swimming, which I did in August,” Leatherman said. This is a huge park with spectacular and picturesque cliffs, which are best seen by boat. The water is crystal clear and surprisingly emerald green in shallow water areas. Pictured Rocks lies between the township of Munising, which has a lumberjack theme, and the community of Grand Marais.
Bayfield Main Beach, Lake Huron, Ontario, Canada. The small village of Bayfield on Lake Huron has earned the “Blue Flag Beach” designation for its main beach. This is a European system of rating environmental quality and services. Crowds are never a concern at this remote beach, which boasts plenty of nearby amenities. The sandy beach grades into cobbles offshore. Bayfield is a delightful town to explore, and the town pier is a favorite place to watch sunsets.
Oak Street Beach, Lake Michigan, Chicago. Oak Street Beach is on Chicago’s famed Lakeshore Drive. This 26-mile lakefront is used by cyclists, runners and parents with strollers; the fine-sand beach has lifeguards, making it a safe place to take a dip. This strand of sand provides stunning views of the historic architecture of Chicago and Lake Michigan. “I recommend public transportation to the beach, as there is limited street parking,” Leatherman said. While in the area, check out Chicago’s many attractions.
Grand Haven State Park, Lake Michigan, Michigan. This state park boasts swimming, camping on the beach, a picturesque red lighthouse, golfing and boating. The city of Grand Haven has several other fine beaches, including Grand Haven City Beach, Rosy Mound Park and its 65 acres of dunes and hiking trails, and Hoffmaster State Park with its hiking trails and nature center.
North Beach, Lake Michigan, Racine, Wis. Among Great Lakes beaches,
this one is perhaps the most improved. In summer, this beach becomes the center of activity for the city of Racine. As an example of its proactive management, the beach has handicap ramps.
