famous child stars

Famous Child Stars

Famous child stars. Most children dream of being famous one day, whether for being a footballer, a supermodel, or discovering a cure for cancer. But for some children fame comes too young, and can have an adverse effect on the rest of their lives. We take a look at some famous child stars, and what happened when the fickle finger of fame stopped pointing at them: Dustin Diamond
Best known as Screech from Saved by the Bell, Dustin played the character for 13 years. However once the show was cancelled Dustin's only TV work was to appear on a number of game shows and reality TV shows such as The Weakest Link and Celebrity Boxing 2. Dustin claims when working as a child actor on Saved by the Bell, he experienced emotional turmoil that hurt his life at home and his future. It has since emerged that he is deeply in debt, and earlier this year he lost his home, as he owed substantial mortgage payments.

James/Lauren Harries
James Harries became a TV star for being a child prodigy in the field of antiques, and famously appeared on Wogan. However Harries's schooling suffered from the heightened publicity. As a child Harries had been taken to see a doctor about his female mannerisms; while the father, Mark, was in prison Harries decided to change her name to Lauren, transition to female, and investigate sex reassignment surgery, which was carried out in 2001. On 8 July 2005, a gang of five to seven men attacked Lauren, her father and her brother in the family home. Harries now works as an artist.

Gary Coleman
Famous for his role as Arnold Jackson in Diff'rent Stokes, Coleman had great potential as a child star. However his adulthood was blighted by debt, legal troubles, and family disputes. In a 1993 television interview, Coleman said he had twice attempted to commit suicide by overdosing on pills. Coleman died in May of this year, after falling at his home.

Heather Ripley
You've probably never heard of Heather Ripley, but you will have seen her film: Heather played Jemima in the 1968 film, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Once the fuss surrounding the film died down, Heather returned to her native Scotland, where she was bullied at school. Miss Ripley developed drink and drug problems and became a single mother living on benefits. She insists that her early career as an actress was "the worst thing that ever happened to me".

Macaulay Culkin
Macaulay is regarded as the greatest child star of our time, and is famous for his role in the Home Alone franchise. His acting career began at the age of four, and he was a massive Hollywood success until 1994, when his career hit the rocks. In 2004 Macaulay was arrested for drug possession and although he married in 1998, he was divorced by 2002.

Lindsay Lohan
Arguably the most famous child star gone bad, Lohan has just completed a short stint in prison. Lindsay began her career as a child model before landing the lead role in Disney's remake of The Parent Trap when she was just 11. She went on to star in several other popular family-friendly films. However her career stalled in 2007 as two driving under the influence (DUI) incidents and three visits to drug rehabilitation facilities led to several lost movie deals. Now more infamous than famous, it will be interesting to see if she can revive her career again.

Infinity Pools

Infinity pools create an intriguing visual effect. Their crystalline water extends to the horizon and stretches to "infinity." Savor these pools that sweep your sights to Polynesian lagoons, the Pacific Ocean, the African plains and even the Himalayas.

Bilila Lodge Kempinski opened in 2009 in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park. The property features 74 guest rooms and suites, including the presidential villa (pictured) with its own infinity pool overlooking a wildlife watering hole. All rooms overlook the Serengeti plains, allowing guests to observe wild game from their private sun decks. The lodge provides private game drives, hot-air balloon rides and bush walks set against the backdrop of Africa’s wilderness. The Serengeti is home to lions, giraffes, gazelles, elephants and buffaloes.

Le Méridien Bora Bora, in French Polynesia, is on the southern point of Motu Piti Aau, a six-mile-long island on a coral reef. The hotel has 99 bungalows, including four lagoon bungalows, 14 beach bungalows and 81 over-water bungalows with glass flooring. Recent renovations added a new infinity pool beneath the Miki Miki bar. The pool is more than 2,000 square feet and has a Jacuzzi, waterfall and deck. The pool overlooks Otemanu Mountain and a lagoon containing more than 100 species, including the endangered hawksbill turtle.
The Marquis Los Cabos Resort and its sparkling infinity pool are perched on the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja peninsula, where the Sea of Cortes meets the Pacific Ocean. The resort has 237 suites, a spa and fitness center, a gourmet restaurant and a collection of Latin American sculptures and paintings. Marquis Los Cabos is a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World and the only member of Leading Spas of the World in Los Cabos.
The Post Ranch Inn is a luxury hotel perched on California’s spectacular Big Sur coast. The infinity jade pool next to the Sierra Mar restaurant overlooks the blue Pacific Ocean. The pool is kept at a constant 104 degrees, making it the perfect place to soak in the view. The Post Ranch Inn also has a spa, guided nature hikes, astronomy nights, morning yoga classes and morning meditation classes.

The Grand Velas All Suites & Spa Resort is nestled in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Take a dip in its 23,600-square-foot infinity pool, where the horizon extends into Banderas Bay and the Pacific Ocean beyond. The resort is 15 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta and has 267 ocean-view suites, spa suites and two- and three-bedroom imperial suites. The resort has a spa, exercise programs including Pilates, yoga and meditation, and a dolphin encounter program that lets you swim with bottle-nosed dolphins.

The Gansevoort Miami Beach’s infinity pool sits within a pool plaza, which includes an outdoor restaurant and an oversized Jacuzzi. The pool provides the perfect vantage point to see the Atlantic Ocean. The resort has 340 rooms and suites, two restaurants, a nightclub and a rooftop pool and bar dotted with coconut palms and cabanas.
When you do the breaststroke in the main infinity pool at Ubud Hanging Gardens in Bali, you look up at a jungle filled with monkeys, butterflies and exotic birds. You will also have the perfect view of a Balinese temple among the trees. For a special treat, book a room in one of the 38 pool villas, and you’ll have your own private infinity pool a few steps from your dwelling.

The 38-story Trump International Hotel Waikiki Beach Walk opened last year in Honolulu. It has 462 rooms and suites. Visit the sixth floor for an infinity pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The pool sits on an expansive lanai fringed with palm trees and sun loungers. Refreshments are available at the poolside bistro.
Wildflower Hall-Shimla in the Himalayas, India, resembles a fairy-tale castle nestled in pine and cedar forests at 8,250 feet. The heated indoor swimming pool has mosaic floors and chandeliers and offers spectacular mountain views. Attached to the indoor pool is an outdoor deck with an infinity whirlpool. It’s the perfect place to relax with a drink and ponder the magnificence of the Himalayas.

The Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, on the southern tip of the Cape of Antibes on the French Riviera, is a renowned refuge for royalty, celebrities and politicians from all corners of the world. It boasts a heated, salt-water infinity pool that encourages you to gaze out upon the Mediterranean. You’ll see Lérins Island and the hills of the Estérel encircling the bays of Cannes and Juan-les-Pins.

Jumby Bay, a Rosewood Resort, is on a 300-acre private island just two miles off the coast of Antigua in the West Indies. The resort has undergone a $28 million renovation and added an infinity pool. With its infinity edge, this lagoon-shaped pool gives the illusion of blending with the Caribbean. It’s a great place to sunbathe or have a nosh at the Pool Grille. The resort also features a spa, tennis courts, guided snorkeling tours, sailing, Pilates and scuba diving instruction.

The Gansevoort Turks + Caicos, a 91-room resort, has an open-air lobby that overlooks a 7,000-square-foot infinity pool with a view of Grace Bay. The pool has four floating islands with umbrellas and lounge chairs that must be reserved in advance. The pool staff is standing by to bring you refreshments. The resort also features yoga and wellness classes, a fitness center and spa, snorkeling equipment, kayaks and Hobie Wave beach catamarans.

Castel Monastero, once a residence for nobility, is now a 75-room resort in a medieval Tuscan village surrounded by rolling hills of olive groves and vineyards. The infinity pool outside the spa has a perfect view of the honey-colored 11th century building. The resort, located not far from Siena, has a Gordon Ramsay restaurant and cooking school.

The Hotel Terra Jackson Hole is one mile from Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming and one hour from Yellowstone National Park. The hotel has an infinity hot tub overlooking Teton Village, which is a great place to relax and take in the ski village views after stomping around the national parks. Outdoor activities in the vicinity include hiking, mountain biking, hot-air ballooning, horseback riding and golf.

The Hotel Caesar Augustus perches 1,000 feet above the sea near Naples on the island of Capri, Italy. Its bi-level infinity pool overlooks the Bay of Naples and offers views of Mount Vesuvius, the famous volcano that buried Pompeii. The hotel can arrange a host of excursions, including those to Monte Solaro and Villa San Michele, through the narrow lanes and past the picturesque houses of Anacapri as far as Damecuta, the Carena Lighthouse and the Grotta Azzurra.

The Burj Al Arab, a hotel designed to resemble a mammoth sailboat, sits perched on the Dubai coastline. For an exquisite view of the Persian Gulf, guests can visit the infinity pool on the 18th floor of the hotel in the Assawan Spa & Health Club. If it’s luxury you seek, check into the spa for a caviar facial or body scrub.

The Radisson Blu Waterfront Cape Town in South Africa is a 177-room hotel towering over the Atlantic Ocean. Its waterfront bar, Tobago's, features tropical cocktails overlooking both the ocean and the hotel's infinity pool. Swimmers can cool off in the pool’s calm waters while seagulls cruise overhead. Contemplate the thousands of miles the ocean waves traveled before they crashed against the shoreline below you.
The Hotel Punta Tragara, originally a private villa, perches atop the cliffs of the island of Capri, Italy. During World War II it was used as the headquarters for the American command and hosted such famous guests as Gen. Dwight Eisenhower and Sir Winston Churchill. The hotel’s infinity pool sweeps your gaze out over the cobalt waters of the Bay of Naples.

Costa Careyes, Mexico, lies between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta. The Costa Careyes resort boasts villas known as “The Castles of Careyes.” Sol de Oriente, pictured, is a villa with six bedrooms encircled by a giant infinity pool. Swimmers can simply step outside of their rooms, plunge into the water, and take delight in a view that stretches to the great blue Pacific Ocean.

Laucala Island Resort is set on a 3,000-acre private island in Fiji. It has 25 villas, each with a private infinity pool, indoor and outdoor shower and outside bath. Each villa, constructed with local timber, thatch and stone, is adorned with traditional Fijian designs and overlooks sandy beaches and turquoise lagoons. Laucala Island also boasts five restaurants, an equestrian center, a fleet of luxury boats, an 18-hole championship golf course and a hilltop spa offering Fijian treatments.

The Al Maha Desert Resort and Spa, 40 miles from Dubai, has 42 individual suites. Each one has an infinity pool overlooking the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. Arabian oryx and desert gazelles wander freely across the plains and dunes, often stooping to drink within this conservation-focused sanctuary resort. When you’re not soaking in the view, you can sample the resort spa, view more than 2,000 original Middle Eastern artifacts or set up a dune picnic or a camel trek.

Obama to Congress on debt talks: 'Get it done'

Obama to Congress on debt talks: 'Get it done'

In a blunt challenge to Republicans in Congress, President Barack Obama insisted Wednesday that elimination of selected tax breaks for oil companies and the super-wealthy must be included in any deficit reduction plan.
"You stay here. Let's get it done," he all-but-lectured lawmakers, holding open the possibility of keeping Congress in Washington unless there is significant progress by week's end on a deal to cut deficits, raise the $14.3 trillion debt limit and avert a threatened financial crisis.
He said a plan must be in place by Aug. 2, a date he called "a hard deadline."
Obama drew a swift rebuttal from House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, who issued a statement saying, "The president is sorely mistaken if he believes a bill to raise the debt ceiling and raise taxes would pass the House. The votes simply aren't there - and they aren't going to be there, because the American people know tax hikes destroy jobs."

strange patents

strange patents

Strange patents. Mixed in with all the high-tech devices, life-saving inventions and world-changing technology are a bunch of really strange things. From the thoroughly strange to the completely unnecessary, each of these patents was once the brainchild of a human being.

Now, you always knew humans were strange, so why would you think the things we think up would be any different?

Banana Protective Device

It's important to protect the things you care about with special cases. A padded bag for your laptop, a plastic case for your iPod, maybe a briefcase for important documents … but what about your fruit?

Have you really thought about how to protect it?

Specifically, we're talking about one easily bruised, strangely shaped yellow fruit. That's right, it's the banana.

Until now, there hasn't been a special case designed to cater to the banana's unusual needs.

Those packing lunches have always depended on the thick yellow casing that nature gave the banana to get the job done, and far too often, they've been left with brown, bruised, smelly bananas.

Thank God those days are done. At last, the banana doesn't have to go naked anymore.

Gerbil Shirt

Haven't you always wanted to be a walking, talking gerbil maze? Well, who hasn't.

They run around the cage, burrowing, chewing up all those tissues, mating, running and - well, actually, that's about it.

This gerbil shirt lets you be a part of your small rodent's fun-filled life by encasing you in a vest with plastic tubing, so those little guys can just scamper all over you for the world to see.

But don't limit yourself to just hamsters and gerbils.

Snakes like it, too!

Let them slither all around you as you shop at the grocery store! Hey, look, at least if you ever see someone wearing one of these vests, you'll now what's going on.

Don't say we didn't warn you.

Pantyhose 3x

Don't you just hate runs in your stockings?

Carrying around a spare pair can be such a hassle, but now, with these three-legged pantyhose, you don't have to, since there's already a spare leg attached!

Lucky you.

Now, when you get a run in one leg, just rotate out of the old and slide on into the new, fresh leg. Some might argue that in the time it takes to remove your leg from the old, torn stocking leg and place it in the new, flawless stocking leg, you could have changed into a whole new pair.

Well, sure.

There's also the question of where to stash that pesky extra nylon appendage… but, really, the most obvious question is: the way panty hose run, does this set have too many legs, or too few?

Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches, Crustless of Course

What is it about sandwiches? Recipes are always closely guarded secrets, but with sandwiches, it gets official.

Don't even try to put a crustless peanut butter and jelly on your restaurant menu. That patent, specifically for a sealed PB&J sandwich, belongs to a subsidiary of Smuckers, the jelly giant that makes Uncrustables sandwiches.

Back in 2001, that meant tough luck for a small Michigan company that had the same (not terribly original) idea.

Maybe that's where McDonalds got the idea to file their "Method and Apparatus for Making a Sandwich" patent.

It even has a lovely flowchart explaining when you should apply the condiments and reminding you to retrieve any necessary cold garnishes.

It's groundbreaking, if nothing else, for its ability to make something so simple, so complex.

Thumb-sucking Inhibitor

What on earth could stop a kid from sucking his or her thumb?

How about covering that thumb in a good, thick metal casing that's attached to a bracelet.

You could make it adjustable, to custom fit it, and make sure it's thoroughly secured, to make it harder to get off. It's like a miniature, portable prison for your thumb -- or, better off, for your thumb-sucking child's thumb.

Because, really, stopping your child from sucking his or her thumb is worth the social humiliation that will surely come once they start wearing their new, oh-so-attractive anti-thumb-sucking ring/bracelet combo.

Kissing Shield

Imagine wearing one of those plastic film CPR shields the next time you share a kiss with your significant other.

What, you say?

The point of kissing is to actually touch another person, to share an intimate experience? Nonsense! This kissing shield protects against all forms of cooties - and, what's better, a subsequent patent includes instructions for games you can play while wearing the kissing shield.

Thank God.

Now you can finally join in all those rounds of spin the bottle, resting assured that you won't be in any way contaminated or grossed out by your partner.

Comb-Over Patent, aka "Method for Concealing Partial Baldness"

It's perhaps the most common solution to the baldness problem, yet who knew that the good old-fashioned comb-over had such precision and method to it?

The specific methodology for a sexy, three-way comb-over is detailed enough that it has been patented since 1977.

The process is simple, really: first, you divide your remaining hair into three sections, then comb it across your head, then look really, really silly.

It's been working that way for at least 30 years now. In 2004, the father-son team who designed the original even won an Ig Nobel prize for their work.

Flatulence Deodorizing Pad

Passing gas, farting, cutting the cheese.

There are a lot of euphemisms out there for something that usually smells quite foul ... but now, with the patented Flat-D flatulence deodorizing pad, your farts don't have to stink!

That's right, you can throw away the Beano.

Fart to your heart's content and no one will know, as the activated charcoal pad absorbs and filters the air, saving those around you from an awful fate.

Already, the Flat-D products have a strong customer base, with some very flatulent, very happy clients claiming it has changed their lives. No doubt.

Anti-Eating Face Mask

What could possibly make resisting those fresh-baked cookies easier?

How about locking your face in a cage? That's right, a cage.

The anti-eating face mask makes it near-impossible to sneak a piece of food in through the cup-shaped mesh around your mouth, but still allows you to breathe. Well, that's a relief.

Sounds like something a militaristic, sadistic diet camp director could only dream of. Just imagine how much better your body could look, if only you were willing to lock your face inside a ridiculous-looking mask.

Somehow, the face mask, which was patented in 1982, hasn't quite taken off. Can't imagine why.

Method of Swinging on a Swing

Remember your parents pushing you on a swing when you were a kid? Well, this is nothing like that. Nothing like that, you hear?

Go on and read the patent; it explains the whole "pumping" method you were probably taught as a child (old school) and even goes on to describe twirling around in the swing (mere child's play).

Luckily, we now have an innovative, fresh method for those who have tired of the old swinging ways. So what is this groundbreaking method? Well, it involves - get this - tugging on the left, then the right, chain of a swing to move from side to side.

It's something you've probably seen 10-year-olds do before - perhaps you yourself once swung from side to side on a swing.

Yes, it's a little untraditional, but groundbreaking? In need of a patent? "A new method of swinging on a swing," promises this patent, "would ...represent an advance of great significance and value."

how to consumer complaint

How to consumer complaint

How to consumer complaint. When you buy goods or services in Ireland or another EU Member State you will have certain rights under consumer legislation. It can be difficult sometimes to know where to complain or to whom you should address your complaint. There are a number of consumer organisations in Ireland and throughout the EU that provide advice on your rights. In the interests of good customer service the majority of businesses will be pleased to set any matter right.
Rules

Know what your rights are
Before you make a complaint be aware of your consumer rights under the law. If you have a written contract or description of the goods or services read what it states. Your complaint will almost certainly be much more effective if you are aware of your rights. Remember: A repair, a replacement or a refund are all possible options where goods are faulty.

Deal with the issue as soon as possible
If a product is defective it is important that you return it as soon as possible after you notice the fault. If you keep a faulty item for a long time, you may be considered to have accepted the item in that state. The situation is similar for services that you are unhappy with. In some cases, there are time limits for taking certain procedures (for example, if you have a complaint about a package holiday you need to complain to the Tour Operator within 28 days of returning from the holiday). Even where there are no time limits set down, it is easier for you and the organisation to deal with recent events.

Find and keep all relevant documents
It is important to keep any documents relating to your complaint. You may need these records later if you take your complaint to another authority to solve it. It is also useful to keep track of the steps you took to address this complaint. That means keeping receipts or cheque-stubs as proof of purchase for the products or services. If you are complaining by telephone, make sure you record details of the calls. That is, keeping track of whom you spoke to, what was agreed, etc. If your complaint is in writing, keep records of what you write, send photocopies of receipts and keep originals.

Proof of purchase
It is your responsibility to prove that you bought the goods or services that you are complaining about. A receipt is just one way to prove that you bought an item or paid for a service. If you paid for the item by credit card, you could use your credit card statement as proof of purchase. A cheque stub can also be used as proof of purchase. If you do pay for an item in cash, ask for a receipt and keep it safe. A receipt issued following a cash transaction is your only record that you have bought an item.

Start at the least formal level
You should begin by making your complaint informally. This means giving the retailer or service provider the first opportunity to solve the problem. It is advisable to speak to a 'decision-maker' such as a supervisor or a manager who may have the authority to give you a refund or replacement. If informal contact with the business doesn't work you should next put your complaint in writing. It may be useful to check in advance if the business has a specific customer complaint form for you to fill in. When you put your complaint in writing, remember to be clear and state all the facts of the case. Remain objective and avoid giving personal opinion, or comments. If direct contact with the company does not work to your satisfaction, you should then complain to the appropriate complaints body if there is one. Escalating a matter is considerably easier when you have exhausted less formal routes. You may also find that many consumer organisations cannot help with a problem if you have already taken the case to a solicitor. Exhausting less formal routes also demonstrates that you took all reasonable steps to redress your complaint before complaining formally. It also demonstrates that the retailer had a number of opportunities to put matters right before you chose to escalate them.

Refunds/Credit notes/Vouchers
If you buy faulty goods and you complain successfully to the retailer you are entitled to a replacement, a repair or a refund. The Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, 1980 does not state how a refund should be made. The retailer or supplier of services can give a refund in cash, cheque or a refund to a credit card account. The retailer could also issue a credit note. Remember: A repair, a replacement or a refund are all possible options where goods are faulty. Read more about Refunds, Credit notes and Vouchers here.
Appropriate complaints body

If you are still unhappy after you have complained to the retailer or service provider, you may need to go to a complaints body. In some areas, there is no specific body to deal with your complaint and your only recourse is to the Courts particularly the Small Claims Court.

There are a number of consumer complaints bodies in Ireland and abroad that protect your rights. Some of these bodies are based in law, others are regulated by the industry, others are voluntary organisations. Some consumer complaints bodies have the power to prosecute offenders, others have the power to make recommendations or non-binding directions.

If you are unsure of your rights, get help from the various information sources listed in consumer protection organisations. An Alternative Dispute Resolution Body may also be able to help you. In some cases, there is no relevant complaints body and you may then have to consider taking a case to the Small Claims Court.

If you have bought on Hire Purchase (HP) or under a consumer hire agreement
Anything you buy under a hire purchase (HP) or a consumer hire agreement must be of merchantable quality, as described and fit for its purpose. In other words, consumer rights in this situation are the same as as if the goods were purchased outright. If you are dissatisfied with goods received under a consumer hire agreement, you should make your complaint to the retailer who sold you the goods. You may also be able to make a complaint to the finance company. If you are unhappy with the retailer's response, you should contact the National Consumer Agency (NCA). The Central Bank of Ireland is responsible for the regulation of credit institutions and has implemented a Code of Conduct for credit institutions.

Consumer Complaints in the EU
European legislation protects you every time you shop in Ireland or in another EU Member State. Consumers can benefit by availing of cheaper prices and better selection of items that the single market provides. Consumer problems that arise when you shop across borders are often more difficult to resolve than problems with local suppliers. Language differences and distance make it more difficult to complain effectively. The European Consumer Centre (ECC) in Dublin is there to support you if you have a problem with a supplier of goods or services in another EU Member State. ECC Dublin provides a free information and advice service on consumer rights in the EU. It is part of an EU wide network of consumer centres and it can help you to solve consumer disputes arising in other member states of the EU. It does this by trying to solve the dispute directly with the provider of goods or services and, if this fails, by referring your case to an alternative dispute resolution body.

Top Buddy Films

Top Buddy Films
Top Buddy Films. Be my friend: top 10 buddy movies. Big goings-on in St. Louis this week, what with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in town Thursday to promote their new cop-buddy film "The Other Guys," which opens today. So it makes sense to take a look at "buddy" movies.

A couple of notes: I'm focusing on pairs of pals, so movies that focus on groups of friends, like "Diner" and "The Big Chill", are not included.

Also, while there have been some good screen teams -- like Walter Matthau-Jack Lemmon, Gene Wilder-Richard Pryor, or even John Cho-Kal Penn/Harold-Kumar -- this is about the quality of a single film, not how good a pair may have been throughout a string of movies.

So pals, here we go:10. "Road To Morocco" (1942): Can't really have this list without tipping the cap to Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, who popularized both the "buddy" movie and the "road trip" movie in the 1940s.

9. Men in Black (1997): The unlikely pairing of the stone-faced Tommy Lee Jones and the hyperactive Will Smith worked like a charm in this top-notch action-comedy about secret government cops who hunt down aliens.

8. Clerks (1994): Dante and Randal may be the most realistic movie friends in the last 20 years, treating each other with the disdain and disrepect only good friends can muster. Kevin Smith's first film is arguably still his best.

7. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986): OK, so maybe Matthew Broderick pulls most of the weight in this friendship, but it's hard not to appreciate the care and concern he has for his best buddy Cameron (Alan Ruck).

6. Ride The High Country (1962): A very strong western, this is the story of two aging cowboys -- hired to protect a gold shipment -- whose friendship is threatened by greed. Last big roles for Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea.

5. Thelma and Louise (1991): One of the first films to treat two women as friends in the male tradition. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis play pals who come together to change their lives, shoot a rapist and end up pursued by police. Great lead performances.

4. The Man Who Would Be King (1975): What a powerful combination: John Huston directs Michael Caine and Sean Connery as slighty shady, adventurous British soldiers who set out to become kings of some small country. Great stuff.

3. Some Like It Hot (1959): Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis play musicians who get on the wrong side of some mobsters, so they dress in drag and hide out with an all-girl band, which features Marilyn Monroe in a substantial role. Billy Wilder's comic masterpiece.

2. 48 Hours (1982): Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy truly struck chemistry gold in this tale about a gruff San Francisco cop who gets a thief out of prison so they can track down a vicious killer. The blend of comedy, action and suspense is spot-on. I can watch this movie any time.

1. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969): One of the great westerns of all time, this film and Clint Eastwood helped revive what was a dying genre in the mid-1960s. Picked this film over "The Sting" because it makes more of the pair's friendship. Another watch-any-time film.

Meter reader who found Caylee Anthony's remains testifies

Meter reader who found Caylee Anthony's remains testifies

The meter reader who found Caylee Anthony's remains testified Tuesday that he didn't touch the bag containing the toddler's bones after he spotted it in the woods and called police.

Roy Kronk discovered Caylee's remains in December 2008 in a wooded area near the Anthony family's Orlando home. Under questioning at the murder trial of the girl's mother, Casey Anthony, Kronk denied ever moving them.

Kronk is a key witness as defense attorneys continue a strategy of casting doubt on the forensic evidence in the case.

In opening statements, the defense suggested that Kronk tampered with the 2-year-old's remains and might have moved them at some point in hopes of claiming a cash reward for finding her. They hinted at that motive during questioning Tuesday, but Kronk denied it.

Kronk first told police in August 2008 that he saw something suspicious in the woods along his route, not far from the Anthony home. Kronk called authorities three times over several days, but they found nothing at the time.

"I saw an object that looked a little odd to me," Kronk testified Tuesday. "I told them I saw an object that looked like a skull."
Defense attorney Cheney Mason asked Kronk if he touched the suspicious object or moved it when he saw it in August.

"I never was closer than 30 feet to that bag," Kronk said.

Kronk returned to the area in December 2008 and spotted the remains, which were then recovered by authorities.

Mason asked Kronk if he shared what he'd seen in August with anyone else. Kronk said he mentioned it in passing to a roommate, but nothing beyond that.

Kronk said only "I believe so" when asked if he knew there was an award being offered for finding the child.

Nearly every member of the jury could be seen taking notes while Kronk testified.
